The compilation of the Oxford English Dictionary began in 1857 and was one of the most ambitious, and revolutionary projects ever undertaken. This challenging task was undertaken by Professor James Murray (Mel Gibson) who knew that, single-handedly, it would take over a century to compile all known definitions. However, by enlisting definitions submitted by people from around the world, the dictionary could be compiled in mere decades. As the project progressed, the overseeing committee discovered that one man, Dr W. C. Minor (Sean Penn), had submitted more than ten thousand words. When the committee insists on honouring Dr Minor for his contribution, the plot takes an intriguing turn as a shocking truth comes to light.
