President's Messages

Vale Phillip Grant Allan

Sadly, on Tuesday another of our wonderful members passed away. On behalf of the Kensington Marryatville Bowling Club, I extend heartfelt condolences to his family.

Phillip was a stalwart and great friend of the club taking on several roles outside pennant bowls. He was President of the General committee prior to the inception of the Board of Management. As a bowler he was an early adopter of a bowling arm which gave him longevity in the game playing until the end of the current season. At last year’s AGM Phillip was conferred Honorary Life Membership. Phillip was a national umpire.

Phillip loved being at the club enjoying the friendship of our community. He never missed a Friday night happy hour, meal or celebration dinner.

Congratulations to Ryan and Lucy

Congratulations to Ryan and Lucy who welcomed our newest member Colette Genevieve on Tuesday at Burnside War Memorial Hospital. Lucy and Colette are well.

Renovation Update

On Saturday, a group moved the new bowls cabinet into the storeroom, removed the old one and cleaned the trophy cabinet. Thank you to Peter Glazbrook, and his group of hardened professionals: Neville Yeates, Kevin Carney, Michael Lynch. Appreciation to Neil Elleson a carpenter and member who gave up time to assist and new professional James Smith.

Thank you to Peter Bahnert for taking on the challenge of finding someone to manufacture the racks. He has added the final touch of providing and installing aluminium angles to protect the face of the structure.
Anne O’Dea, David Frick loaded up the old rack to take to a new home at Arno Bay Bowling Club.

Schools Program

We have been running a very successful program with students from Saints Girls School during Term one. Several girls have shown talent and interest, and we are hopeful that we will have a school team to compete in the Bowls SA Interschool Challenge in May.

As in recent years, the Health & Physical Education staff at Norwood International High School have requested the opportunity for their Year 10 classes to have an introduction to lawn bowls at our club during Term 2. There will be three classes, each to have four lessons on days and times as shown below.

Hence, I am asking members who are willing to volunteer to assist with this program to contact me on 0488 033 945 or by email to kjacwats@ozemail.com.au. With thanks in anticipation of your support.

This is the ninth year that our club has been in SAWIBBA. We are one of 11 clubs in this competition. Games are played on Tuesday mornings at a range of venues. This competition forms an important link for our lady bowlers. Not only does it keep our ladies connected to the club, it is also a welcome activity during the colder months and builds our expertise in bowling. It provides a friendly and competitive activity with a wide range of women who enjoy both indoor and outdoor bowls.

This year they will be able to appreciate our lovely new facilities.

  • Indoor pennants start on April 28.
  • First practice begins on Tuesday 7th April at 10.00 am (after EASTER) (bowls supplied)

Bowls AGM (May 8)

The AGM has been advertised. Please note that all positions become vacant, so it would be wonderful to see some new faces and new ideas for members who are interested in joining the committee as a committee member or as part of the Executive.

Over the last three years, the current committee has been working positively and enthusiastically for every member.

  • To increase the visibility of the club within the broader community through events such as Gala days and hosting Bowls SA events.
  • Recognising the valuable contribution of volunteers is an important aspect of the club, which has grown in significance over the last three years due to Pat Lee’s work.
  • We are continually looking at ways to attract new pennant members, grow Night Owls and Winter Social Bowls. Social Bowls has once again been a great success for the club.
  • Success with Pennant competitions has been extremely encouraging and will continue to build the club’s reputation within the bowling community.
  • Club facilities have continued to benefit from improvements due to the energy of the Facilities Improvement committee.
  • Our website and social media have increased our reach significantly.

It’s not too late to nominate. Nomination forms are on the noticeboard. Have a conversation with a committee member to find out what is involved.

Winter Bowls (from April 30 & May 3)

Thank you to Kevin Carney and David Freeman along with their team of assistants who have agreed to manage the club’s off-season programs. Thursday will begin on April 30 and Saturday on May 3 unless otherwise communicated.
