President's Messages

Club Championships

Thank you to Kim Draper who has managed Club Championships with great efficiency this year and congratulations to all players who entered and those who reached the finals.

Friday night was intended to be when the last finals were played. However, due to circumstances outside our control, a couple of games remain to be played; men’s singles and men’s pairs.

On Friday night a large group of spectators came out to enjoy the finals, games played were:

  • Ladies pairs – Georgia Kolberg and Gaby Lynch vs Katie Gunning and Liz Greenfield. The game was very tight with Liz and Katie snatching victory in the last 2 ends.
  • Ladies singles - Robyn Hutton vs Heather Garnett which saw Heather win her third championship.
  • Men’s handicap singles – Pat Lee vs Gary Stagg. Another tightly fought game with Pat taking the lead late in the game to secure a win.
  • Men’s singles will be held on Sunday March 15 – Greg Miller vs Ryan Wilkins.
  • Mixed pairs champions - Bill Lewis and Heather Garnett
  • Open sets singles - Ryan Wilkins
  • Open sets veterans champion - Gary Stagg
  • Open handicap champion - Pat Lee

Selection for Pennants

There have been a few instances where players have not received notification of team selections. If this occurs, please refer to the club website under Pennant Bowls. Teams are posted here each week.

Friday Night Meals

Many of you will have noticed that Friday Night meals have not been available for a couple of weeks. There have been some issues to work through which have been resolved so that meals can continue Friday, March 20.

The menu will remain as à la carte with the changes to the procedure. Meals will need to be ordered either online or on a list in the usual place in the clubroom.

The main change will be no table service. This means that meals are to be collected from the servery by diners and used plates and cutlery returned to the servery.

C Green

The green will be closed after our tournament on Monday for major renovations later in the week. It will then remain closed for a considerable time. I urge to be patient as there is a large body of work to be completed to improve the quality of the surface.

Annual Pilgrimage to Caltowie

In contrast to last year, the weather at Caltowie was perfect for bowls on Sunday and Monday of the long weekend.  As usual, the tournament was well presented and well attended.  In addition to local and neighbouring Clubs, bowlers came from afar to enjoy the day - Port Pirie, Beaumont, Kensington Marryatville and Morphet Vale. Our hosts spared nothing to ensure that we were well fed and entertained. The hospitality was outstanding.

The proceedings commenced on Sunday evening when a community bus transported us from Jamestown where we stayed, to Caltowie Bowling Club.  Teams were formed and play began after a welcoming feed of pizzas and desserts, and the odd beer or glass of wine.  A bowl had been mounted on a small piece of roughly hewn tree trunk, this being the trophy presented to the winners of the inaugural, albeit informal Sunday evening pre-tournament competition.  It was a lot of fun and everyone agreed that it should be an integral part of proceedings into the future.

The tournament proper on Monday was preceded by morning tea.  Lunch was varied and sumptuous, as was the afternoon tea at the completion of the days play.  Raffles were conducted and some of us were lucky enough to win a prize. We were part of a group, some of whom had been participating in this annual event for a number of years.

Teams were selected by Brendan O’Connell and Ross Turner, as follows:

Team 1.

  • Pip Malone (Kensi)
  • Joan Young (Kensi)
  • Ella McDonald
  • Georgia Kolberg (Kensi)

The team recorded 1 win, 1 draw and 1 loss.  Joan Young was the new member of the group and was warmly welcomed by all.

Team 2.

  • Brendan O’Donnell (Beaumont)
  • Ross Turner (Kensi)
  • Gary Byron (Kensi)
  • Robert Pope (Beaumont)

The team recorded 1 win and 2 losses.  The Bowls gods did not smile upon this team who were defending their third place at lasts year’s tournament.  In each of the first and second games, scores were even going into the final end, but our team lost both last ends.  Had they won these last ends, they would have finished in one of the top three places, for the second year in succession.  Alas, it was not to be.  The third game was won quite comfortably, but by this time, the horse had bolted.

Team 3.

  • Peter Moore (Kensi)
  • Peter Vincent (Beaumont)
  • Michael Ward (Kensi)
  • Peter Orvard (Port Pirie)

The team also lost their first two games but comfortably won the last one, ending the competition on a high note. On Monday evening, most team members dined with some of the locals, including Trevor Crawford, the Tournament Organiser and his wife, Chris at the Commercial Hotel in Jamestown.  A very pleasant finish to what was yet another outstanding event conducted by the good folks at the Caltowie Bowling Club.

A visit to the grave site at the Jamestown Cemetery, of the late Vin Malone, our former good friend and Club member, late on Monday afternoon, introduced a rather sombre and sobering element into our pilgrimage. We remember Vin fondly.

Bowls AGM (May 8)

The AGM has been advertised. Please note that all positions become vacant so it would be wonderful to see some new faces and new ideas, members who are interested in joining the committee as a committee member or as part of the Executive.

Over the last three years, the current committee has been working positively and enthusiastically for every member to increase the visibility of the club within the broader community through events such as Gala days and hosting Bowls SA events.

Recognising the valuable contribution of volunteers is an important aspect of the club, which has grown in significance over the last three years due to Pat Lee’s work. We are continually looking at ways to attract new members, grow Night Owls and Winter Social Bowls.

Success with Pennant competitions has been extremely encouraging and will continue to build the club’s reputation within the bowling community.

Talk to a committee member to talk about what is involved.

Winter Bowls (April 30 & May 3)

Thank you to Kevin Carney and David Freeman along with their team of assistants who have agreed to manage the club’s off-season programs. Thursday will begin on April 30 and Saturday on May 3 unless otherwise communicated.
