President's Message

Today November 24, is the Ladies Gala Day and we are going back to the 70s. All is looking amazing due to the many months of work by the tournament committee led by our Tournament Director, Allan Wilkins. As always, it takes many willing volunteers to organise and run a successful event.

Thank you to everyone who has stepped in and made the day possible, which has included working around the renovations. Numbers may be a little less than previous years, which is one of those things at this time of the year with so many competing commitments. Nevertheless, we will have a wonderful day reliving the 70s. Looking at the forecast, unlike Saturday, the weather promises to be favourable.

Pennant Results

Wednesday - all teams were away

  • Division 2 vs Playford. Lost 90 to 106.
  • Division 4 II vs Hope Valley. Lost 55 to 60.
  • Division 4 III vs Adelaide. Lost 52 to 68.

Thursday - all teams were home

  • Division 1 vs Lockleys. Won 78 to 49.
  • Division 2 vs Toorak Burnside. Won 81 to 44. This team is travelling along quietly and very effectively. They have won every game so far. Rotation hasn’t made a difference to their enthusiasm or success. Great work ladies.

Saturday:

What a difference a day makes! Due to persistent torrential rain on Saturday many matches ended up being unplayed and points shared.

  • Division 2 vs Adelaide at home. Lost 50 to 64.
  • Division 4 vs Colonel Light Gardens away. Unplayed.
  • Division 5 vs Reynella at home. Won 67 to 56.
  • Division 6 vs Trinity Gardens at home. Unplayed.
  • Division 7 vs Croydon away. Unplayed.

Reminder — if you will be unavailable for a game, please write your name in the unavailable book with the blue cover. The book is located outside the kitchen door next to the blue box. Contact selectors as noted on selections as they are sent out each week.

Rinks of the Week (Round 6)

The club will endeavor to distribute the drink vouchers to the winners asap during the week. Friday night Happy Hour and the Friday Dinners are a great time to use your vouchers. For those vouchers not yet distributed, you will have a good chance on Fridays to collect your vouchers from either Ryan or Pip.

  • Saturday:  Gary Stagg, Gaynor Dahlin, Russell Miller, Peter Howe
  • Wednesday: Greg Miller, Bill Lewis, Allan Wilkins
  • Thursday: Cecily Griffiths, Debra Churches, Mary Phayer, Sue Binns

National Umpires Course

The club is keen to attract more members to become officials at games as markers, measurers and umpires, which eases the load on our current officials.

More importantly, we need to ensure that we have umpires present at home games each week rather than relying on visitors to provide umpires. Much of the training is available online with a short on green component required to complete the course. The flexibility of including online components means that more people who work during the week have access.

The club will provide reimbursement of expenses on provision of a receipt. The link for the course is below. To get started follow the log-in directions.

Greens Management

I have just returned from greens maintenance as advised below. Both greens have been watered (only lightly after yesterday's downpour) to allow for intense rolling. All ready for tomorrow. Kevin Carney will attend early Monday to check on greens.

I had, however, two club members this morning who were surprised to be rained onto by the sprinklers as they had ignored the ‘Greens Closed’ signs on the playing surface and were apparently not aware that both greens are closed between 8am and 12pm today as per the maintenance white board. Unfortunately, they had to reschedule the match.

Please check the maintenance board if playing a tournament/championship game to reserve a rink. This should be booked well in advance by writing on the outside Kensi whiteboard located between the gate and first side door. Pip will make sure there is a whiteboard marker available for this purpose which will be located near the blue box on the bench in the clubrooms. Please make sure you return same once you have used it.

If you don't book, maintenance will have priority and you might be asked to move onto another green.

Renovation

The renovation continues to progress positively towards completion by the Christmas break. For up-to-date information please visit the page below:

Club Championships

The first round of the club championships closed today. The sheet of rules has been removed. I will post a new one soon. If you have not played your first round match and have not scheduled the game within the next week, the game will be forfeited. If you have played your match, please remember to put the results onto the sheet posted on the board. If no result is posted, I will assume that it has not been played, and will record the result as 'forfeited'.

The next round dates will be posted in the next newsletter.

Club Hires - Volunteers Needed!

The following are a list of club hires where social bowls has been requested and is expected to occur. If hirers request social bowls, bowls club members are expected to provide assistance. Where helpers have been requested, the following duties are what is required to ensure a successful day.

Helper Duties

As a helper, you would be expected to provide the following:

  1. Help with the set up the greens. This involves placing mats, jacks etc out for the number of rinks required, dependent on the numbers.
  2. Provide assistance, if required, to participants to select the correct size bowl, demonstrate how to hold the bowl correctly, the bias etc, as well as the basic delivery method.
  3. Provide supervision, particularly where children are involved, to ensure no damage to the greens from dropping or dumping of the bowls occurs.
  4. Assist with the pack up of the bowls, mats, jacks etc at the completion of the hire. Provide guidance to the hirers of where rubbish goes, cleaning products are located etc to assist and ensure the hirers are able to clean up after themselves at the end of the hire.
  5. You are encouraged to interact and make welcome the participants, particularly promoting the club and the opportunities we provide, like Tuesday and Thursday Night Owls, coaching etc. You never know where the next club member or champion might come from!

As a helper, you would be NOT expected to provide the following:

  1. You are not expected to address or coordinate the group per se, BUT, see point 2 above.
  2. You are NOT expected to clean the clubhouse after a hire. That is the responsibility of the hirer. But, see point 4 above.
  3. Unless you have an RSA, and have been contacted by Ken Mason, you are not expected to help behind the bar.

If you are available to spare a couple of hours to provide this assistance, please contact myself or Ken Watson.

Donations Needed for Christmas Baskets

A number of Christmas Baskets are prizes for our Christmas Raffle to be drawn at the Christmas Dinner on 12 December 2025. This is a call out to you for donations to make up these baskets. We want them to not only look amazing but be a valued prize to whoever is the lucky recipient. We will leave a basket in the clubrooms for your donations and would be most grateful for whatever you can give.

Christmas Raffle (12 Dec)

Please ensure all books and money are returned to Pip by Friday 5 December 2025. The raffle will be drawn at our Christmas Dinner on Friday 12 December 2025. The books and money can be placed in an envelope and put in the Blue Box on the bench near the kitchen door at the clubhouse.

Christmas Dinner (12 Dec)

The booking sheet is now in the clubhouse and payment is required on booking to secure your place. The dinner will be preceded by the drawing of the Christmas Raffle at 6.30pm and as always we hope to have a few surprises. Music will be provided by our "in-house" DJ and dancing is required this year. The menu will be posted on our Facebook Page and Website this week.

Friday Night Happy Hour and Dinner

Reminder — get your name on the list in the clubrooms if you would like a meal or alternatively, give Pip a ring and she will add your name.  Don't forget to invite your neighbors, family and friends to join us. Meals are bistro-style, pay when you order at the counter on the night. Although we prefer to know how many are coming, walk-ins will be accommodated. Take-away meals are also available.
