Message from the President

Some of you may not be aware, our president, Marg Lambert, has escaped the Australian winter for warmer climes in the UK and Europe. She will be returning (presumably with Alan) around 23rd June.
In the meantime, I thought I would provide an update as to the going-ons at the club and around the bowls landscape.

I attended the MBA AGM 15 Jun, held at Clarence Gardens BC. There were a couple of points raised which will be discussed at the next committee meeting, and passed on in a future newsletter. A couple of points though:

Pennant afternoon Teas

A motion was passed to remove the requirement for clubs to individually package snacks/sandwiches etc for afternoon teas. There is no health requirement for clubs to do this, and it is now up to clubs how they present their afternoon teas during the half-time break.

Thursday Pennant Bowls:

The MBA are monitoring the number of nominations for Thursday pennant bowls for the 2025/26 season, and if deemed necessary, they may look at some sort of restructuring of the competition, BUT the focus will be on reducing the impact of any travel clubs may otherwise have to do.

Surveys:

There are a number of surveys out at the moment, (or there will be soon). Please utilise this opportunity to have your voice heard by the MBA. Whether it's the length of the season, the format, heat policy etc. If you don't speak up, they can't hear you!

Paradise Motors Sponsorship:

The MBA president reminded us of the Paradise Mazda sponsorship package. If you buy a car from Paradise Mazda, they will donate $200 to our club! Admittedly, not everyone is out buying a car every second week, BUT, if you were to have your car serviced by Paradise Mazda, they would donate $100 to the club! Now that's an easy way for you to help support your club by doing no more than having your car serviced!!

Club Renovations:

Now for something a little more serious. You should all be aware the club has been making plans and putting arrangements in place to have renovations carried out over winter, and hopefully having little to minimal impact on the beginning of the 2025/26 season. While the committee have made preparations to have the works commence ASAP (lockers cleared out, bowls moved into main room etc.), there has been no word yet from the Board of Management as to when the renovations will commence.

Peter Glazbrook, the Project Manager, briefed the committee last Tuesday night on the state of play. The BoM are waiting for an announcement from the State Government on whether the club was successful in obtaining a $118, 000 grant to assist with the renovations. If the club is NOT successful, the BoM/KGBTC have already allocated the funding for renovations, in conjunction with the Marryatville Trust. The State Government have delayed their decision (from the end of May) as to who has been successful with their grant application, with no new date given as yet to when the announcement will be made. Renovation works were scheduled to commence 2 weeks ago.

At the last committee meeting, a motion was passed to put forward a motion to the BoM to commence the renovations, regardless of the State Government's grant application outcome. In accordance with the Constitution, the motion was submitted for consideration by the BoM, with a supporting petition on Thursday 12 June.

This is not a decision that was taken lightly by the committee, but highlights the concern the Bowls Committee has, and the impact that any further delays will have on the club as a whole, in a number of areas, including club hires/functions (potential for lost income), any potential breach of contract with our contractor, club reputation, and most importantly, whether the Bowls Committee need to start instigating contingency plans for the 2025/26 season (scheduling away games until the club is in a position to once again host visiting clubs).

I will be taking our (the Bowls Club) concerns to the BoM meeting on Tuesday night 17 June and I will announce further updates soon after.

Australian Open:

On a happier note, our members have been making an impact at the Australian Open, being held on the Gold Coast. Notable performances have seen Tony Spriggs win his opening three matches to proceed through to the knock-out phase, and Katie Gunning achieving similar results in the female competition!! Well done to all involved! For a complete update, check out the Australian Open website.

Surveys - Open to June 30

2025/26 KMBC Bowls Intention Survey

The committee would appreciate current members completing the first seeking your intention regarding bowling in season 25/26 KMBC including updating records if they have changed.

2025/26 Pennant Bowls Season Review of Coaching and Performance

At the beginning of the 2024/25 Pennant Bowls season, the Bowls Committee formulated a list of requirements and objectives to be actioned with a view to the implementation of a co-ordinated coaching plan for the Club. The plan was discussed with the coaching panel prior to the commencement of season 24/25 and actions agreed.

The performance of the Club in the Pennants Season was overall with some exceptions, poor. Two sides were relegated and another two were close to being relegated. This was not good enough and action to identify the reasons for this situation and to find a way to achieve significant improvements for the 2025/26 Season is needed.

During the season focus and effort was supportive of improvement to individual performance, which is undeniably positive but not enough. A sense of belonging as part of a team, developing rapport among players is significant in creating success.

Thinking of Henry Ford and Albert Einstein. The quote frequently attributed to them "If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got" highlights the importance of changing behaviours and approaches to achieve different outcomes. Therefore, adopting the same course again and expecting a different outcome would not be a reasonable approach to resolving the problem.

The committee seeks honest and detailed feedback from each pennant player to the questions in assisting to find ways to create change. There are 3 questions which can be accessed via the link below. There are 2 sections, Coaching feedback and Bowls Teams Performance feedback.
