Breast Cancer - Play 4 BCNA

In line with Bowls SA’s partnership with the Breast Cancer Network Australia, KMBC joining forces with Bute Bowling Club’s Kate Brokate’s successful fundraiser ‘A Buck a Bowler’.

The process is simple – we gather donations in a bucket at your club, then deposit the collected funds into your bank account. By organizing ‘A Buck a Bowler’ initiative, where each player contributes a dollar during Pink Round 4 – 9 November, the bowling community can easily raise funds without extensive efforts.

The simplicity of this approach has proven successful in gathering significant donations from various clubs on the Yorke Peninsula and other areas in the past.

During the week we have opportunities to collect donations on:

  • Wednesday
  • Saturday
  • Night Owls on Tuesday and Thursday

Kate is passionate about raising money for breast and prostate cancer research because of my personal experience with breast cancer. I had a double mastectomy and chemotherapy, realising the crucial support needed during such times. Witnessing the free support available, I feel compelled to pay it forward as many others will require similar assistance. Men also need support for prostate cancer, so in the past, I split fundraising efforts between both causes. The emotional and physical toll of cancer is immense, and the free support provided is invaluable.

I’m sure that many of us can relate to Kate’s story through personal experience or supporting close friends and families who have or are fighting cancer. The statistics for breast cancer are that 1 in 7 women will be diagnosed over their lives and 1 in 542 men. Unfortunately, the disease seems to be becoming more prevalent in younger people, so research is vital to improve the understanding and cures. I look forward to members supporting the Pink Round during round 4.

Night Owls Start This Week.

A reminder that the Night Owls season has commenced with both Tuesday and Thursday nights being well attended.  There was a cancellation of the actual bowling on Thursday due to inclement weather but the large crowd enjoyed the night in any event with drinks, good jokes recited by Michael Ward and a raffle including an impressive meat tray. It was a really lovely night.

Friday Night Dinners

Due to lack of attendance, lack of volunteers, catering issues and cost, it was unanimously agreed by the Committee at our October meeting to abandon official fortnightly dinners.  A big thank you to Michael Ward for his effort in cooking dinner on Friday and thank you to all who helped him on the night.

No more regular fortnightly formal dinners will be arranged from hereon. In lieu of regular dinners, it was agreed that Happy Hour at 5:30pm each Friday will become our focus, with people welcome to bring a plate of food to share if they so wish. There will be a requirement for those attending to clean up at the conclusion of the evening.
