Pre-Season Preparation

How time flies! Winter Social Bowls wraps up at the end of the month then it’s onwards and upwards for season 2024/25. Many of you have been out playing and practicing while others have enjoyed the break catching up with family and friends. Others have sought warmer climates, although northern Australia has been a little cooler and wetter than usual.

Coaching

Coaches, Mentors and Aspiring Coaches Meeting!

On the back of a very successful season we are intent on building on our success through building up our coaching panel to support all our players.

To this end there is a meeting for all current accredited coaches, mentors and aspiring coaches on Thursday 15th August at the club 10-11.30am. At this meeting we will plan for the season ahead and build a consistent approach to our player support.

If you are interested in finding out more about this meeting or attending, please contact Greg Miller on 0409 880 356 or greg.miller995@gmail.com

Becoming a coach is a great way to find out how to improve your own bowling skill as well as supporting other club members.

See you there!

August is your Pre-season

As the days become longer and the weather improves it’s a great time to get your game in order for the upcoming season! Start your personal preseason now and hit the season running! The best approach is to make sure you are drawing confidently and that technique is sound.

Draw bowling is the most used and therefore the most important skill. Do a block training which is at least 3 times a week for 3 weeks. A typical training session includes drawing to minimum, maximum and mid length jacks. Then move on to off centre jacks and more than one target with a single bowl to each. Finish with off centre jacks near the ditch. In every drill always strive to get two bowls within a mat from the target.

High improvers always challenge themselves appropriately. This means that you try challenges that are around 15% harder than you can manage comfortably. For example, if you can draw two or three bowls out of four to a jack at a particular length then you move on to two jacks about 2 metres apart and draw two bowls to each. Your success rate is to get three bowls within a mat from the target. Or you may set the jack off centre instead of on the line.

The interesting thing about high improvers is that they also challenge themselves early in their practice rather than towards the end when they are more tired. Thinking about the practice regime I suggested above, you could reverse the order of training and start with off centre jacks near the ditch!

The research around improvement shows that regularly practicing challenges around 15% harder than you can achieve comfortably is that your improvement skyrockets! And it’s not just the more difficult skills that you improve but interestingly the basic draw bowl to the centre line also improves dramatically by practicing more demanding skills!

Please keep the winter challenge results coming through by emailing me at greg.miller995@gmail.com or send me a photo of your score card by message to 0409 880 356!
