Shades Replacement Project Update

Work started last Thursday with the delivery of the steel construction. Unfortunately, the weather god wasn’t kind to us for this task and construction work was delayed until Friday morning only to be interrupted by heavy rain in the afternoon. Workers returned Saturday morning but experienced some issues due to the concrete surfaces are not being level over the entire length of 30 meters.

Work will continue on Monday 03 June and is anticipated to last at least until Wednesday 05 June weather permitting. After the structure is up and safe we will have to get the greens cleaned up to ensure all is good for bowling. The greens team will keep you posted when play can resume.

Bowls SA Awards Night May 31st

I would like to thank the club and its committee for the nomination for the Bowls SA “Volunteer of the Year” award. I made the final cut and was successful in receiving this award last night at a function of Bowls SA. I am honoured and grateful for both the nomination and being the recipient of this award which came as a total surprise to me.I would also thank the many members who expressed their gratitude of my work in a way that left me almost choking. Be assured it is very much appreciated.

  • Ulli Kruse

Congratulations to Ulli Kruse who won Bowls SA Volunteer of the Year award. A well-deserved win.

I think that you would agree that Ulli is the volunteer every club would love to have. Over the years his contribution has been enormous and done in his way; quietly not seeking to be in the limelight. In the last 12 months his volunteering has been next level taking on managing the artificial greens maintenance, which takes many hours.

Ulli, Peter and Mike are an amazing greens team who make sure that our playing surfaces are in excellent condition always. Players from other clubs have commented that they are the best artificial surfaces they have played on. Positive comments are important in enhancing our reputation within the bowling community. As an aside they are always grateful for assistance from other club members.

Metropolitan Bowls Association (MBA) AGM

I attended the MBA on May 26 at Lockleys Bowling Club.

Club Survey – 34 out of 49 clubs provided feedback. What was the consensus? No real changes.

  • Length of season – most found this to be satisfactory therefore no change.
  • Match breaks – most prefer a break, however there is none for Premier League on Thursday and Saturday. On Wednesday all sides have a break.
  • Refreshments – there are issues surrounding the number of volunteers available who have completed a safe food handling certificate. MBA suggests a minimum of tea, coffee and prepackaged snacks, which is exactly what KMBC committee decided for the reasons presented by other clubs.
  • Wednesday and Saturday starting times – no change.
  • Wednesday format – no change. There may be an increase in the number of ends played by triples, so all rinks finish at a similar time.
  • Pre match rollup – no clubs in favour therefore will revert to a similar format as was previously.
  • Playing Premier League at different times was not favoured and did not increase the number of spectators.
  • The number of Open Gender players permitted on Wednesday and Thursday and restrictions on position and sides – no change.
  • Premier League – to remain at 16 players.

It is proposed to reword some Conditions of Play to enable improved clarity. Election of Officers: No change. Contact details below.

Paradise Mazda Club Incentive

At the MBA AGM held on the 26th May we reminded all the Clubs present, that our Sponsor, PARADISE MAZDA, continues with their rewards program for our member Clubs throughout the whole year. As well as giving the Club a $100 donation, for a Club member or social member purchases a new or used vehicle from them, they will give the Club a $50 donation if a Club member or social member has their car serviced by them. The MBA Executive earnestly asks all Clubs to promote our new Sponsor as follows: -Please display the attached poster within your Club for everyone to view.

  • Announce to your members and social bowlers the benefits that can be gained for their Club.
  • Please Email a copy of the Sponsor poster to each of your members and social bowlers.

The Club member needs to advise their Club Secretary of the purchase or car service such that a copy of the attached claims form can be sent to the MBA Secretary, that will be forwarded to Paradise Mazda for payment to the Club.

The success of retaining a Sponsor for the long term, will always rely on how much effort is made to promote the Sponsor to our members and social bowlers for them to be aware of the benefits available for our Member Clubs and the MBA.

  •  Mike Porter, MBA President.
